Process: More Doom Defiers Thumbs
Back-Filling the Megaton Man Universe at Bing's Bar
I’ve reverted to the quarter-size rough thumbnails I used back in the late eighties for various projects including Wasteland and Megaton Man #11 for this sequence I’m working on for Megaton Man and the Doom Defiers—a project that is in the queue well behind other projects, so don’t plan on ordering it any time soon; it’s still on the ol’ drawing board.
I’m working from a tight script which I’m not reproducing here, since it will be a spoiler, but it’s not unlike the level of detail I’ve shared in other recent posts.
I call these “quarter-size roughs” because they are 1/4 of an 11” x 17” sheet, or half of a letter-size 8.5” x 11” sheet—5.5” x 8.5” bond paper, specifically. I’ve experimented with various sizes over the years and find that this size allows me to get detailed but not too detailed. I will blow up these scans to full size and trace.
This scene is noteworthy because it takes place in Bing’s Bar—Bing Gloom being Yarn Man. There are a number of familiar faces: Stella, Simon, Felicia, Geneviève, Clarissa, and Kara, as well as some of the Victory Folks, the Pictopians, Paul Nabisco, and Cowboy Gorilla.
In fact, several loose threads from past comics, like X-Amount of Comics, converge here. A special Non-Prize if you’ve already spotted Gower Goose’s old gal Roxy from Bizarre Heroes #9 and Nikki, last seen in The Megaton Man Weekly Serial.
Bing’s Bar is also the hangout of the Origin Legion (from Yarn Man #1), so expect even more old friends to crop up in subsequent pages.
